# What’s a Cubic Meter, and Why Does It Matter When You’re Moving?

#####

If you’ve ever asked a Melbourne removalist for a quote, you’ve probably heard the term “cubic meter” (or “m3”) thrown around. It sounds technical, but it’s actually a really simple idea — and understanding it can save you money and stress on moving day..

## The Simple Explanation

### What Does One Cubic Meter Actually Look Like?

#####

Picture a cube — like a big square box — that’s 1 metre tall, 1 meter wide, and 1 meter deep. That’s one cubic meter. It’s simply a way of measuring space, not just floor area.

Why does that matter? Because when a removalist works out how much your move will cost, they’re not just thinking about how much floor your furniture covers — they’re thinking about how much room it takes up on the truck, in every direction. A queen bed doesn’t just sit flat; it has height too. So does your fridge, your couch, and your bookshelf. Cubic meters capture all of that.

A handy way to picture it: stack about 8 medium-to-large moving boxes together. That pile is roughly one cubic meter.

## Why Removalists Care So Much About This Number

##### Why Removalists Care So Much About This Number

### What a Cubic Meter Tells Your Removalist

If you’ve ever asked a Melbourne removalist when you call around for moving quotes, the first thing most removalists will ask is roughly how many cubic meters of stuff you’re moving. That’s because it tells them:

How big a truck they need to send
How many people they’ll need on the job
How much the move is likely to cost, since many quotes (especially for longer or interstate moves) are priced per cubic metre

If you only think in terms of floor space (square meters), you can end up way off the mark — because a room stacked to the ceiling with boxes takes up a lot more truck space than an empty one, even though the floor area is identical..

Roughly How Much Space Do Common Items Take Up?

Big Moving

Working Out the Space for a Bigger Item

Say you've got a buffet unit that's 1.8m long, 0.75m high, and 0.75m deep. You'd multiply those three numbers together: 1.8 × 0.75 × 0.75, which comes out to just over 1 cubic metre.

For something like a sofa, measure the full length, the width from front to back, and the height from the floor to the top of the backrest — not just the seat height.

Doing this for every item sounds tedious, which is exactly why most removalists — including us — offer an online inventory tool where you just tick off what you own, and it calculates your total cubic meters for you.

### What If You Don’t Need a Full Truck? (Backloading Explained)

#####

## What Size Truck Will You Actually Need?

Removalist trucks come in a range of sizes — generally anywhere from around 20m3 for a small load up to 70m3+ for a large household. As a rough guide:

A single-car garage full of stuff is roughly 15m3
A double-car garage full of stuff is roughly 30m3

And for a typical 3-bedroom house:

Furnishing Level Truck Space Needed Time Needed
Lightly furnished ~31m3 ~8 hours
Moderately furnished ~35m3 ~9 hours
Heavily furnished ~38m3 ~10 hours

If your load doesn’t fill an entire truck, don’t stress — that’s where backloading comes in. Your goods share a truck (in a securely separated section) with another customer’s move along a similar route, which usually works out cheaper for you.

##### Our Advice: Don't Guess

It’s tempting to eyeball your move and give a rough estimate — “yeah, it’s a 3-bedroom place” — but this can bite you later. If one of those bedrooms is basically empty, a rough guess will still price you as if it’s fully furnished, and you could end up paying more than you need to.

Spending a few extra minutes doing a proper item-by-item inventory (rather than a quick room-by-room guess) is the best way to get an accurate quote and avoid surprise costs on the day.
